Wall-E
A review by Lianna

Loved the message but not the movie.

The CGI animation was state of the art, but it takes more than pretty pictures to keep me entertained for an hour and a half.  As I have said many times before, I need some sort of depth of plot and character to keep my attention.  But then maybe I’m expecting too much of a children’s film (unfortunately I didn’t begin to realize it was actually a children’s film until I got to the theater and saw trailer after trailer for other children’s films inter dispersed with advertisements aimed directly at the “mommy can I have one of those” set.

I consider myself an environmentalist and an anti-consumerist, so I whole heartily agreed with the message of the move and thought that the animation was extremely good.  I even liked the fact that there wasn’t any spoken dialog for a good part of the film, but I found myself getting board and thinking this is one of the longest hour and a half movies I’ve ever seen.  Wall-E was sort of like cotton candy, lots of sweetness and no substance.

Beyond the anti-consumerism, anti-pollution and not becoming a wasteful, lazy, self absorbed slug (all of which I see way too much of today) message, the film was a typical (and somewhat thin) rehash of the worn out story of a reluctant hero, working class, trash collector robot who meets a beautiful, sophisticated biologist robot and how they fall in love and save the world…how may times have we seen that plot before?

I’m sure that the millions of Walmart sold, Made in China, Wall-E toys, games and cheap crap that this film will generate would choke a Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class and pack a good sized landfill!  It seems a bit hypocritical to me that Disney Corporation, the owner of Pixar, is making a statement against consumerism.

Perhaps I’m missing something, or just looking for more than a mouth full of refined sugar, but I’m feeling generous, I liked the message so, I am going to give Wall-E three wyvies.
